A Hidden Island Gem That Deserves A Spot On Your Travel Checklist!!!
If you have never heard of Cape Verde, you’re not alone. I hadn't either until I stumbled upon a quiet photo online of sun-soaked beaches and smiling locals in vibrant clothes. I clicked out of curiosity, and by the end of the day, I was researching flights.
Fast forward, and now I can confidently say that Cape Verde is one of the most peaceful, overlooked, and relaxing destinations on earth especially for solo travelers, parents needing a break, couples seeking reconnection, and anyone looking to escape the noise of the world.
In this post, I’m going to share exactly why Cape Verde needs to be on your radar and what makes it one of the most serene, safe, and soul-soothing countries you probably haven’t considered.
First Things First: Where is Cape Verde?
Cape Verde (or Cabo Verde) is a group of 10 volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 km (310 miles) west of Senegal, Africa. It’s an island country but not your typical one.
It’s a unique blend of African roots and Portuguese colonial influence, with rich culture, slow living, and breathtaking landscapes.
Languages: Portuguese (official) + Cape Verdean Creole
Currency: Cape Verdean Escudo (but Euros are widely accepted)
Best Time to Visit: November – June (dry, warm, sunny)
1. It’s Quiet, Calm, and Incredibly Safe
Let’s start with what drew me in the most: the peace.
Cape Verde is one of Africa’s most stable nations politically and socially. There are:
• Low crime rates.
• No political tension or civil unrest.
• Friendly, welcoming locals.
• A strong sense of community and hospitality.
Whether I was walking through local markets, strolling the beaches at sunset, or enjoying rooftop dinners I never once felt unsafe or anxious. That’s rare in travel, especially as a woman or parent traveling with children.
This is the kind of destination where you truly relax not just physically, but mentally too.
2. The Islands Offer the Perfect Mix of Adventure and Rest
Cape Verde is made up of 10 main islands each with its own vibe.
Some popular ones:
• Sal – Best for beaches, resorts, and watersports
• Santiago – The largest island with local culture and history
• São Vicente – Home to Cape Verde’s cultural capital, Mindelo
• Boa Vista – Desert-meets-ocean vibes with untouched beaches
• Fogo – Volcanic island for hiking lovers and nature explorers
You can fly between the islands or take ferries. Each one offers something different from kite-surfing and hiking to village cooking classes and wellness retreats.
3. Beaches That Heal the Soul
Cape Verde beaches aren’t packed with tourists or loud parties. They're clean, quiet, and absolutely stunning with soft golden sand and turquoise waters stretching endlessly.
I spent entire afternoons on the beaches of Santa Maria (Sal Island) sunhat on, baby napping in the shade beside me, waves whispering nearby. No stress, no hustle.
These beaches feel untouched you can:
• Swim without worrying.
• Walk for miles with ocean views.
• Watch fishermen bring in fresh catch.
• Sip fresh juice or coconuts from local stands.
Cape Verde may be small, but its music is BIG.
The country is famous for morna, a melancholy, soulful genre (think Portuguese fado meets African rhythm). You’ll hear it in restaurants, on the streets, even in the hum of daily life.
Mindelo (on São Vicente) is the cultural heart of Cape Verde, home to artists, poets, and musicians. If you love live music, art, and culture you’ll feel at home.
Even my baby seems calmer hearing the soft morna tunes play under the sunset.
5. The Food Is Simple, Fresh, and So Good
If you’re a foodie (or a tired mom who just wants a good meal), Cape Verde will not disappoint.
What you’ll find:
• Fresh seafood (tuna, lobster, octopus).
• Cachupa – their national dish (a slow-cooked corn and bean stew).
• Tropical fruits — papaya, mango, banana.
• Local wines and grogue (a rum-like drink).
Everything is organic, locally sourced, and full of flavor. Plus, the hospitality is next level even at small street food stalls.
6. It’s Family-Friendly Without Being Overwhelming
As a mom who loves traveling with her kids, I’m always scanning for places where I feel like I can truly enjoy myself without constantly worrying.
In Cape Verde:
▪️️ People genuinely love children (locals often helped carry my bags!).
▪️️ The pace is slow and steady no rush, no pressure.
▪️ Accommodations are affordable and child-friendly.
▪️ Beaches and nature allow for easy outdoor play.
Even solo moms can relax here without feeling watched, judged, or unsafe. It felt like the world paused just enough for me to breathe.
7. Affordable Yet Comfortable Accommodations
Cape Verde isn’t “cheap” in the backpacker sense, but it’s way more affordable than most beach destinations.
What I paid:
• Comfortable guesthouse on Sal Island: $40–$60/night
• Meals: $5–$10 per dish
• Local transport: $1–$2 per ride
You can find beautiful resorts for $100–$200/night, or live like a local in budget-friendly guesthouses or Airbnbs.
8. Easy Access from Europe and Africa
Cape Verde is surprisingly accessible:
• Direct flights from Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, France.
• Flights from Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, and Morocco.
• You can even book flight+hotel packages via TUI or TAP Portugal.
Visa? No stress.
Many nationalities can enter visa-free or with eVisa.
The entry process is smooth and efficient.
9. Mental Reset Like No Other
Let’s face it some of us don’t just travel to explore, we travel to heal.
Cape Verde was that for me.
After a stressful season of motherhood, work, and emotional exhaustion, being in Cape Verde reminded me of how powerful stillness, sunshine, and simplicity can be.
I journaled, rested, and I let go of things that didn’t serve me.
I connected more deeply with my child, with myself, with peace.
Sometimes, healing isn’t a retreat. It’s a quiet beach on an island no one talks about.
